Wednesday 3/16/11

No photos today, but it was a fun and interesting day.  There was an option to start 1 of 3 rides directly out of Fredericksburg, or to drive an hour to Bandera to start 1 of 3 rides from another location to see a different area of Texas.  Karen opted for the 45 mile route directly out of Fredericksburg, met a nice lady with whom to ride, and enjoyed a nice day of cycling (other than having some rain during the first hour).  Karen had the most incident-free ride of our group today.

Jim, Kelley, Julie, and Cam hopped in the truck and travelled to Bandera with the 70 mile route as their goal.  Julie has been battling a terrible sinus infection all week, and today it took its toll on her. Julie decided part-way into the ride that the wind and the rain and the stress of riding every day was making it too difficult to battle her cold, so she re-routed and ended up with a solid 44 miles of riding.  Julie's early return to the truck proved to be fortuitous for Jim and Kelley and Cam.  Kelley has been struggling with an achilles injury which was aggravated by a long walk up a very steep hill when Jim and Kelley experienced a mechanical problem with their tandem which resulted in an inability to change into their hill-climbing gears.  They persevered through mile 60, but Kelley's achilles became increasingly inflamed and we decided it was better to stop before the problem became so bad that it might prevent her from riding the rest of the week.  We were grateful that Julie was back at the truck and able to pick us up along the route.  After BBQ sandwiches in Bandera, we drove back to meet Karen in Fredericksburg.

Tonight, we got another visit with Karen's Baylor room mate, Jeri, and her husband, David.  They came from Kerrville to join all of us at Hondo's for burgers, salads, fried chicken, and some really great live music.  Jimmy Davis and Thomas Michael Riley may not be famous names from listening to the radio, but these singer/song-writers are very well known in the music industry for songs they have written for many popular country artists.  We had a great visit among our good friends, plenty of laughs, and fantastic entertainment as well as we dined outdoors in the courtyard.  This was Julie's last night to stay with us, so it was a great way to end her week in Texas.
