Sunday 3/13/11

Jim was up extra early to reconstruct his tandem bicycle which had been completely disassembled down to the bare frame for shipping.  Yesterday began cold in the morning, but was warm and sunny by mid-morning with temperatures in the upper 70's.  Today began cool, but stayed overcast and chilly throughout the ride.  Once again, we chose the shortest route (50 miles) today so that we could gauge how we will ride together throughout the balance of the week, and so that Jim and Kelley could fine-tune the tandem assembly.

The travel from Fredericksburg was southwest today, versus northeast yesterday.  However, the scenery was just as rural and "countrified" with many ranches and lots of open country, with light traffic and exceptionally courteous drivers the few times we encountered cars or trucks.  Today did seem hillier than yesterday, and we wandered in and out of several other groups of cyclists over the course of the ride. As we pulled into town, Karen suggested deviating from the final couple of miles on the prescribed route to visit an herb farm.  After returning to Blue Cottage for showers, we decided that it was late enough in the afternoon (2:30p) that we would have a big lunch and skip dinner.  Karen and Cam have deep Texas roots, but Jim and Kelley and Julie needed to be introduced to some real Tex-Mex dining, so we paid Mamacita's a visit, and enjoyed a nice variety of south-of-the-border cuisine complete with sangria and margaritas.

We spent the rest of the evening preparing our gear for tomorrow, folding laundry, and wandering around town a little bit. We had talked about watching a movie at the Blue Cottage, or spending a little time reading, but by the time we all finished getting things ready for tomorrow, we just wanted to go to bed.
