Friday 2/11/11

Apparently, the line from Eastern Standard Time to Central Time must run near Auburn because our phones did not switch to Central time last night.  We thought it was a little odd Kent’s/Tammy’s clock in our bedroom was an hour behind ours, but we decided to just trust our phones.  That was a mistake.  Cam awoke at his usual 4a Eastern Time, and Karen at 6a.  After reading a while and checking emails, we showered and dressed for the day.  Kent said his family would be up at 6:30a to get ready for school.  When the house was still dark and quiet at 7a (on Karen’s and Cam’s watches), we started to get concerned that they may have overslept.  However, before we started knocking on doors, we decided to check our phones again.  Sure enough, they had switched to Central Time during the night which means we were up at 3a and 5a.  We laughed at ourselves and settled in to relax until everybody else was up and dressed.  After some family photos, the girls left for school, and Kent gave us a tour of the beautiful Auburn campus.  Then, Tammy joined us and we had a nice chat over breakfast at IHOP before hitting the road for the 8 hour drive to Tampa.
Cam working on the blog:

I told Karen before we arrived in Auburn that I remembered Kent as a very good dentist with a lot of charisma, and I felt sure he had been very successful in dentistry.  It appears I was right.  Kent met Tammy after he left FEWarren AFB, so this was our first time to meet her – she is a sweetheart, and treated us like old friends even though she didn’t know us prior to this visit.
We took a little detour on the way to Tampa to see Manatee Springs State Park on the Suwanee River (“Way down upon the …”).  Karen has always wanted to visit this site.  We  never got to see more than the noses of a couple of breaching manatees in the distance, but we did see the largest flock of buzzards we have ever witnessed – hundreds all perched like gothic Christmas tree ornaments on the cypress trees guarding the banks of the river.

After Manatee Springs, we finished today's 8 hour drive to Tampa where we joined Karen's sister, Kim, and Karen's neice, Rachel for a BBQ dinner at Smokey Joe's.  Driving distance today was 420 miles.
